“American Idol” is back! Keith Urban admits he and his other “American Idol” judges went through an adjustment period.

He explains that in many ways he, Mariah Carey, and Nicki Minaj were just thrown into the show alongside Randy Jackson, which was evident during the auditions.

Keith says they received no directions or guidance at all. He explains that they all met in New York one night for dinner, and the next day the four of them were behind the judges’ table expected to work as a team. He compares the process to a dance, saying they were all sent out on the floor and told to “dance together in perfect synchronized movements” and they “stepped on a few toes at the beginning.”

“American Idol” is launching its 12th season on Fox with a two-part premiere airing Wednesday and Thursday night at 8:00 p.m.
