Coca-Cola May Have Derailed A Sugar Tax By Manipulating Research

While Coca-Cola may be sweet to drink, the company behind the beverage may be a lot harder to swallow.

According to Food Beast, a series of emails from the company were uncovered that suggest the company purposefully influenced a study looking at the causes of obesity. This was all done in order to sabotage a tax on sugar in the UK.

The study found that spending too much time in front of screens and poor sleep were key factors related to obesity, and claimed that “more work needed to be done” to prove diet affected it.

While the company has backed studies that shifted the blame away from sugar in the past (and even faced lawsuits over it), this case is much more significant. Dispatches have revealed that Coca-Cola representatives were actually in contact with members of the study team and were actively trying to derail the sugar tax.

Cardiologist Dr. Aseem Malhotra has decried the company’s behind-the-scenes involvement in the study, saying:

“‘You can see Coca-Cola pulling the strings – the studies tend to be positive for them. When the studies are independent they are not. This is the tip of the iceberg. Commercial corruption of science and medicine is endemic. Science institutions collude with industry for financial gain at the expense of public health.”
