Yesterday the city held a private meeting with Lyft, Uber and a few other technology companies with the hopes of bringing self-driving cars to the area. According to the Sacramento Bee, Mayor Steinberg’s goal is to make the city attractive to entrepreneurs.
Additionally, Steinberg said “We are willing to take risks. We are hungry for change. Sacramento is the perfect petri dish to not only test this technology, but to show how it can be brought to scale.”
There have been some issues in other areas of these cars running red lights and moving into bike lanes. In December, Uber had to stop testing in San Francisco, so they moved to Arizona and are already picking up passenger there and in Pittsburgh.
According to Curb, Uber is coming back to SF though, and multiple other technology companies have gained permits to test on the city streets.
