6th Grader From Sacramento Competing In Today’s National Spelling Bee

Not to brag or anything, but I totally won the spelling bee in third grade. I’m pretty sure I didn’t have to spell the words that Eleven-year-old Samhita Kumar did though. Samhita goes to school at Winston Churchill Middle School in Carmichael.

She is one of 40 students competing for the glory today in Maryland. She spoke to Sac Bee about advancing and said, “I’m really excited, and I’m just, like, so happy,” she said with a big grin.

The televised event is on at 8:00 pm EDT on ESPN. Good luck, Samhita!

Two of the words she aced in earlier rounds were  phosphorus and disproportionate.

UPDATE: Samhita was knocked out of the competition by the word duxelles. It’s a dumb word anyway.

Great job getting as far as you did, Samhita! Hopefully we will see you take home the trophy next year.
