Keeping It Fresh: Gary LeVox Talks Longevity In Country Music

At it now for 18 years (!) Rascal Flatts is one of country music’s most enduring acts and it’d be very easy at this point to sit back, rest on their laurels and coast. But not these guys. Recently, they surprised a couple in Wisconsin by showing up and performing “God Bless The Broken Road” at their wedding reception after being contacted by someone in the wedding party.

“…Our people set it up with her sister” Gary LeVox told us when he called in recently. “‘Bless the Road’ was gonna be their song so they were kinda standing off on the side of the dance floor waiting for the DJ and we come walkin’ out with guitars…and there wasn’t a dry eye in the house. It was awesome.”

Did they start getting requests to perform at other weddings as a result?

“Yeah there are literally like half a million emails!” He joked. You can see their performance, below.

It’s doing things like that, Gary told us, that keep it exciting.

“We’ve got the greatest jobs in the world. Our fans, and doing that kinda stuff, you know, all of the charity work we do…that makes everything worth all the hard work and the hours in the studio and the time you spend away from home and your family. It’s just, you know, it’s just a blast”.

The group’s current single, “Yours If You Want It” is the first off their tenth album, and, as another example that the boys are far from slowing down, it recently moved into country’s top ten. The song has extra meaning for Gary, Joe Don Rooney and Jay DeMarcus: it was written by Andrew Dorff, a popular Nashville songwriter (he wrote, among other hits, “Neon Light” for Blake Shelton and “Save it For a Rainy Day” for Kenny Chesney) who passed away unexpectedly last year at the age of 40. LeVox noted he’s glad that for Dorff’s legacy, the song is doing so well, and is happy he got to hear it before he passed away.
