18-year-old Obdulia Sanchez was arrested on Friday on suspicion of DUI and vehicular manslaughter. Sanchez was livestreaming on Instagram while driving in Los Banos when, according to Newsweek, her car veered off of the road, through a fence and overturned in a field.
Sanchez continued to film through the entire incident and afterwards, including footage of her standing over the body of her 14-year-old sister who was ejected from the car, saying she was sorry and that she knew she was going to jail forever. Her sister died as a result of the crash and another 14-year-old was injured.
Sanchez is currently being held in Merced County Jail.
According to the CDC in 2015, one-third of traffic deaths in the United States involved an alcohol-related incident. Add that to phone use, and you have a recipe for disaster. Please don’t drive under the influence, and do not use your phone while driving.
