Rattlesnakes Battle It Out For 20 Minutes On Auburn Hiking Trail

Last week traffic was halted on the Lake Clementine Trail in the Auburn State Recreation Area for quite an unusual reason. A couple of rattlesnakes decided that it was the perfect place to go head-to-head.

Ryan Sabalow of the Sacramento Bee was there with a couple of other employees of the magazine and he said that the pair went at it for at least 20 minutes.

The trio thought the snakes were possibly mating, but upon further inspection, it turns out that they were entangled in a romantic feud, with the winner getting the chance to mate with a nearby female. Which means there were at least THREE snakes nearby. Ew.

I definitely would have run away.
