Did you know the acronym “OMG” is 100 years old?! Well, now you do. I’m not surprised the expression “Oh my God” is old, considering people were pretty religious then. But the fact someone started abbreviating it surprised me.
Inc. reports it was 1st recorded in a letter dating all the way back to 1917 by a British Admiral named John Arbuthnot Fisher. It wasn’t a shorthand letter either! He used it as a colloquial expression.
Of course, there’s plenty of slang words we use today that are old. You just don’t see abbreviations often used in texting like that.
