Scientists May Have Found A Cure For The Peanut Allergy

My brother has a nut allergy, so this excites me! He may no longer have to carry an epi-pen. Gizmodo reports scientists in Australia may have found a “cure” for the peanut allergy. A trial of probiotics mixed with peanuts successfully lead to a peanut tolerance lasting four years. The study was limited, but it’s safe in the long-term.

“Our findings show that combined probiotic and peanut oral immunotherapy provides long-lasting clinical benefit compared with placebo,” the authors wrote in their paper, “with two-thirds of treated participants symptom free after peanut ingestion 4 years after completing treatment.”

Constantly avoiding peanut contact is not easy. Even if it doesn’t work for everyone, I’m sure those suffering from this potentially deadly allergy would be more than willing to try. The findings are, at the very least, a starting point that could lead to more studies and advancements.
