Dierks Bentley has had a friendship with U2’s lead singer for several years now. It all began when Dierks would occasionally send songs to Bono for critiquing.
Back in 2016, he told Radio.com “I have a tradition now of sending a song or two to Bono for every record and getting a response.” And in fact, Dierks recently posted a photo of himself, his wife Cassidy and Bono. The pic appears to be backstage but Dierks was apparently too geeked out to say where they were.
Regardless, we’re guessing that get-together was probably why U2 decided to mix in a little Dierks with one of their songs over the weekend in New Orleans.
A fan caught the moment on video as U2 was performing their hit “Beautiful Day”. Right smack dab in the middle, they suddenly broke into a verse from “Drunk On A Plane”, with Bono actually singing the “up so high” line twice. The fan posted the clip to Instagram and when Dierks (who wasn’t at that particular show) saw it…?
Yep. He geeked out all over again, writing, “Trying to process… U2 breaking into drunk on a plane last night in New Orleans. Can’t make this up. Thank you whoever posted this video. I need a drink… maybe several!”
