Ew! If you belong to a gym, this will make you use the hand sanitizer…A LOT! A new study found gym equipment is dirtier than public toilets, Fox 5 reports! Health clubs are breeding grounds for bacteria, MRSA, ringworm, and even toenail fungus!
FitRated.com went to 3 nationwide chain gyms and tested 27 different kinds of equipment. They found the average exercise bike is 39 times dirtier than a cafeteria tray. Treadmills contain 74 times more bacteria than a public bathroom faucet. Free weights are the worst with 362 times more bacteria than a public toilet seat. They also found the common cold virus on more than half of all gym equipment.
Obviously, the best way to avoid catching something gross is to wash your hands and/or use sanitizer after your work out and wipe down your machines and mats. Avoid touching any open wounds while working out and never go barefoot into the locker room. Then again, it’s never a bad thing to let your body become immune to these things.
