Modesto City Council Sells K-9 To Family Of Fallen Officer For $1

I’m not crying, you’re crying!

Less than two months after Modesto Police Sgt. Mike Pershall was killed by a suspected drunk driver, the Modesto City Council unanimously approved the sale his K-9 partner, Ike, to his family for one dollar.

“The dog has been by the family’s side as part of their comfort,” Modesto Police Chief Galen Carroll said. “I think the right thing to do is to sell him to the family.”

Ike is a trained Belgian Malinois K-9s, which KCRA says can cost over $10,000.

Residents came to the city council meeting to express their support of Ike being sold to the Pershall family, and many offered to raise money to help the police department cover the costs of a new K-9. City council members also spoke in favor of the sale.

“Given the amount of service and the dedication that Sgt. Pershall and his family showed to keep the citizens safe, it’s the very least we can do to help bring comfort to the family,” council member Tony Madrigal said.
